Shandon Phan is the Managing Attorney of Shandon Phan Law in Houston. He advises families and business owners in English and Vietnamese, and most of his work comes down to one thing: making sure what somebody spent a lifetime building actually reaches the people they meant it for.
The work
Shandon practices estate planning, business planning, asset protection and elder law — and he has deliberately kept the practice small enough to do it personally. Every plan he writes is built around the specific family in front of him, because the facts that decide an outcome under Texas law are rarely the ones a standard questionnaire asks about.
He is a trusted advisor to clients across the whole arc of a decision rather than a single transaction: the legal, financial and business consequences of what they are about to do, and what it will mean for their family twenty years from now.
Why this work
Before he became an estate planning attorney, Shandon worked in communications for a national nonprofit and later represented people affected by the BP oil spill, work that put him face-to-face with families navigating loss, uncertainty, and a legal system that didn’t make it easy on them. He saw firsthand what it costs a family, financially and emotionally, when the hard decisions aren’t made in advance.
What he found was that the families who get hurt are almost never the ones who made a bad decision. They are the ones who made no decision, because nobody ever explained what the default was — and under Texas law the default is almost never what anyone would have chosen.
On the radio, and in print
Shandon hosts a weekly legal and business radio talk show on Saigon Radio 900AM in Houston and 1600AM in Dallas, answering listener questions on estate planning, business and asset protection. He speaks regularly to community groups and to professional audiences — attorneys, accountants and financial advisors — on estate planning, business transactions and asset protection.
